Graswurzelrevolution

Das Schlachten beenden!

(End the slaughter!)
The current controversies with regard to veganism, animal rights movements, campaigns against factory farming and animal testing have a history, one partly connected with anarchistic, pacifistic, socialist and feminist reasoning. "Das Schlachten beenden!" traces the history of vegetarianism with commented texts by Leo Tolstoy, Elisée Reclus, Magnus Schwantje, Clara Wichmann and Willi Eichler. They all demand an end of violence to animals, not just as a question of a healthy diet, but also moral and social necessity, there being no such thing as humane killing.

Essays on animal rights philosophy and animal ethics

Gotthard Martin Teutsch (1918–2009) was one of the most important pioneers of animal ethics and environmental ethics in the German language. This volume is dedicated to his memory.
Gotthard M. Teutsch is not primarily commemorated by placing a focus on him and his work, but rather by in essays introducing and furthering apporoaches and questions from the field of topicsthat for so long were at the centre of Teutsch's own endeavours.

C.H.Beck Hilal Sezgin

Artgerecht ist nur die Freiheit
Eine Ethik für Tiere oder
Warum wir umdenken müssen

(Only freedom is humane)
Cruelty to animals is hard to bear. Nonetheless, humans tacitly accept that countless animals are tormented in experimental laboratories and - allegedly "humanely" - abused in feeding pens and slaughterhouses, because they cannot imagine a life without "animal products". Those who cannot live with this discrepancy should read Hilal Sezgin's eye-opening book. She investigates the question as to whether we should mistreat animals in the interest of medical research, or lock them up, kill them and eat them. In a lively examination of other (animal-)ethical standpoints, she makes a case for a recognition of animals as individuals with rights of their own – also in our own interest. At the end of this dedicated animal ethics stands the vision of a humankind able to share the earth with other animals. A brilliantly written, compelling invitation to change our way of thinking.

Verwandte im Geiste - Fremde im Recht

Since Darwin the question is whether the difference between humans and animals may only be one of degrees. The investigation of the socio-cognitive characteristics of animals focuses on a decisive aspect of the evolutionary relationship of human and animal.
What consequences regarding the moral status of animals arise from the newest insights into their intelligence and skills? And what does that mean for our dealings with them and our understanding of human-animal-relations?
Animals are increasingly the subject of serious academic thought, as this book from the meritorious series »Tierrechte - Menschenpflichten« (Animal rights - human duties) from Harald Fischer Verlag shows.

Tierethik: Grundlagentexte

(Animal ethics: fundamental texts)

Is using nonhuman animals for our purposes legitimate? Holding them captive, killing them or experimenting on them? In the comparatively young philosophical discipline of animal ethics, a variety of argumentss are presented, depending on the undelying moral theory, with which our current dealings with animals are either justified or – in the most cases – sharply criticised. This anthology is a collection of the most important contributions to this debate – many for the first time in a German translation - including texts by Tom Regan, Gary Francione, Martha Nussbaum, Cora Diamond, Christine Korsgaard and Will Kymlicka.

Echo Verlag Steven Best

Totale Befreiung
Eine Revolution für das 21. Jahrhundert

Steven Best vividly describes the deep crisis in which humankind and nature are. He unsparingly addresses the most urgent problems of the contemporary animal rights movement, the vegan movement and other social movements. He reasons that they can only overcome their deficits if the complement and support each other, which is why he advocates an alliance that is broader and deeperthan any so far. Steve provocatively and openly states a case for direct militant action in the sense of extended self-defence with the goal of liberating animals, humans and nature.

Zoopolis - Eine politische Theorie der Tierrechte

German language edition of "Zoopolis: A Political Theory of Animal Rights"
Zoopolis offers a new agenda for the theory and practice of animal rights, shifting the debate from the realm of moral theory and applied ethics to the realm of political theory, focusing on the relational obligations that arise from the varied ways that animals relate to human societies and institutions. Building on recent developments in the political theory of group-differentiated citizenship, Zoopolis introduces us to the genuine "political animal". It argues that different types of animals stand in different relationships to human political communities. Domesticated animals should be seen as full members of human-animal mixed communities, participating in the cooperative project of shared citizenship. Wilderness animals, by contrast, form their own sovereign communities entitled to protection against colonization, invasion, domination and other threats to self-determination. "Liminal" animals who are wild but live in the midst of human settlement (such as crows or raccoons) should be seen as "denizens", resident of our societies, but not fully included in rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
